About Us

We are the Sotonettes, a modern, progressive Women’s Institute based in Southampton City Centre.

Our next main meeting, “Mayflower 400 and Beyond” will be on Tuesday 25th February at 7.30pm

Almost 400 years ago, on 16 September 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, UK, to voyage to America, known to English explorers at the time as the New World. But its history and story start long before that and on 15 August 1620, the Mayflower and another ship, the Speedwell, left Southampton and began this historic voyage.

More than 30 million people can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew aboard the Mayflower when it landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts, in the harsh winter of 1620.

Andy Skinner will present the fascinating story of the Mayflower, as well as some extra Southampton history following 1620, including the story of Isaac Watts and the clock chimes still heard to this day in the city.

We meet in the Top Hall of Above Bar Church – access is via the door on Ogle Road. If you have special access requirements, please let us know in advance as step-free access is available. You are welcome arrive any time from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

For more details please go to our Facebook Event or email us at sotonettes@gmail.com if you have any questions.

If you’re not a WI member, it’s only £5 to visit us and take part. Sotonettes WI members attend free and members of other WIs pay £3.

Refreshments (tea/coffee and cake/biscuits) are £1 but only 50p if you bring your own reusable mug. If you have special requests, please let us know, although we always offer at least one decaffeinated hot drink and gluten free snacks.

The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. Have a look at the National WI website here.

Modern WIs are uniting women across the country, mixing traditional WI principles with a focus on topics and interests of their members. It’s not all Jam and Jerusalem!

Please note that our programme may be subject to change.

Our meetings are a place where women of all ages from the local community can share interests and learn new skills, and, most importantly enjoy themselves.

The Sotonettes WI usually meets on the last Tuesday of the month, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, upstairs in Above Bar Church, Above Bar Street in central Southampton. On occasion we may meet on a different date or use a different venue but this will be well advertised in advance.  Each meeting is different and we have a range of things lined up. We may be learning a new craft or skill, having a speaker come in to talk about a topic or focusing on a campaign issue. To find out what we’ve got planned take a look at our Events Calendar. We’re also on Facebook and Twitter too.

Thinking of joining the WI?  You are very welcome to come along to a meeting to find out more about us and you don’t have to be a member to participate – attending as a visitor costs £5 per meeting. Alternatively, you can join the WI for a whole year in 2020 for only £43. You may visit us three times before joining – if you join on the same night as visiting, we’ll even refund your visitor fee! If you are a current member of another WI, just bring along your membership card and it’ll only cost £3 to visit us.
